Why does Driversnote need access to Motion Sensor?

We want you to have the most accurate tracking possible. Together with Location access, Driversnote needs access to your phone’s motion sensor.

This will enhance both GPS and automatic tracking and improve tracking accuracy.

When you are using motion tracking to track your trips, the Motion sensor is crucial, helping your app to detect when a trip starts or stops.

Even when using the iBeacon, the motion sensor is useful, as it helps your app to know when you are not moving, which can be used to decrease GPS tracking points and save battery power.

Overall the motion permission allows Driversnote to:

  1. Improve tracking accuracy
  2. Save battery (by relaxing the GPS tracking when you are not moving)

Common questions

Q: I already have the iBeacon to help with my trip tracking, do I need motion sensors running too?

Yes, you want to have your motion sensor active, even with an iBeacon. Even though the iBeacon will give you a more accurate trip start and stop, the motion sensor will help you conserve battery by checking if you are moving and relying less on GPS sensor readings when that is the case.

Q: I tried to enable motion in my phone settings, but its not available and grayed out. What should I do?

On iPhones:

Go to your phone settings and to Privacy & Security > Motion & Fitness where you can then enable the setting.

Once that is done, you can go back to Settings > Driversnote and enable to the Motion & Fitness setting there.

On Android 10 and above:
  • Go to your phone settings > Apps
  • Find and tap on Driversnote
  • Go to Permissions > Physical Activity
  • Select Allow Physical Activity access for this app

The motion permission is not available for Android 9 and below.
